National Reading Month Celebrated By Students at PSES and SSES

Students at PSES and SSES are celebrating National Reading Month by embarking on Canastota Reads, an initiative launched last year to encourage positive reading habits and foster student engagement in school.
This year’s book is “The Best Friend Bandit,” by Marty Kelley, and students are encouraged to complete reading about two chapters a week at home with family members. Students also receive questions about each chapter to complete at home and daily trivia questions in school to encourage them to keep up and practice their reading comprehension and listening skills. Students who complete the work are eligible for prizes.
“Canastota Reads will help us continue to foster a community of readers within our schools,” school leaders wrote in a letter home to families. “Everyone – students, parents, teachers, nurses, support staff, cleaners and bus drivers will all be sharing in the joy of reading and literacy related activities.”
Although the initiative is happening in the early grades, PSES and SSES once again enlisted a high school art student, junior Kate Snyder, to design the posters that are up around the school and village.
The PK-3 schools kicked off this year’s Canastota Reads with a virtual visit from the author! The schools also had several themed days to infuse some fun into the literacy project – including reading to a stuffed toy or animal, celebrating Dr. Seuss on Read Across America Day, and wearing their favorite hat to school.
Later in the month, students will have a Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) day and will close out the project on March 25 by dressing like their favorite characters from the book. In the end, students are able to keep their copy of the book to add to their personal collections.
